Club Information & History
Battlebridge Boys Club was formed by a group of concerned parents
in the late 1950's. Their concern was the lack of youth club facilities
in the Merstham and North Redhill area.
These parents organised football, cricket, and athletics. Meeting
in their various homes they realised the club needed a meeting place
and base, if it was to develop and offer a year round outlet for
their members. After many jumble sales and sponsored events they
were able to raise the money to build the club house in Frenches
road.
They joined the Surrey Association of boys Clubs and grew from
strength to strength. The club was officially opened in November
1963 by the then Mayor of Reigate and Banstead Council. It provided
for a five nights a week youth club. As well as the traditional
youth club activities the club also developed a very successful
Boxing section and it became apparent football was to play a big
part in the clubs popularity.
In the 1970's skateboarding was introduced and culminated in a
visit to U.S.A. Also at this time the Battlebridge International
Youth Football Festival started and quickly became one of the most
important local football tournaments. Attracting clubs from Italy,
Holland, Germany, France and Scotland plus teams from all over England.
The club returned these visits sometimes as many as three European
tours a year.
Unfortunately the Youth Club has had to be suspended whilst current
development work goes on around the club house and work is being
done to establish a new home for the club.
Two years ago the club decided to change its name and membership
to encourage girls football and become Battlebridge Club.
Meanwhile the football section continues to thrive offering football
to children from age six to sixteen. Catering for all abilities.
Battlebridge Club is Affiliated to the Surrey Association for Young
People (SCYCP) Surrey County FA Limited with all the teams playing
in the Tandridge Youth League.
